CarbonCounted congratulates our partner in New Zealand, Sempre Avanti for being awarded a trophy by the UN Environmental Programme CN-Net for being one of the first 100 participants in the Climate Neutral Network.

“Launched a year ago with an initial four countries, four cities and five companies, the CN Net today brings together a wide range of participants, including countries big and small, some of the world’s best-known cities, major international companies, UN agencies and leading NGOs. These first 100 participants – the CN Net Centurion – were honoured at the 25th session of the UNEP Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Programme meeting this week in Nairobi, Kenya.

UN Under-Secretary-General and UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner said: “The Climate Neutral Network was born in response to the growing need to federate the many bold and inspiring initiatives being taken the world over to address the global climate change challenge and embrace the opportunity to ‘de-carbonize’ our economies and societies.”

Sapporo Breweries have announced that they will print on the beer can labels how much CO2 is emitted per can from growing the barley, brewing, producing the aluminum cans, and delivery. Other labeling projects have been announced by supermarkets in the UK and Sweden, but this may be the first time a major corporation provides CO2 emmission data directly to consumers. On Friday March 29, 2008 at 8pm, join cities around the world in literally “turning out the lights” for Earth Hour, a World Wildlife Fund (WWF) event to raise awareness about climate change and symbolize that, working together the people of the world can make a difference in the fight against global warming. Officially announced in December 2007 at the United Nations Climate Change meeting, Earth Hour has grown from a single event in Sydney, Australia in 2007 to a global phenomenon that will occur across six continents and as many as 20 cities in 2008.

Toronto will be the flagship city in Canada to commemorate Earth Hour 2008. Our goal is to get thousands of businesses and individuals to participate in this historic event, so we can show the nation and the world that we are leaders in addressing climate change, one of the most critical issues facing our world today.

Visit www.wwf.ca/EarthHour to sign-up and add your name to the Earth Hour movement.

CarbonCounted supports the efforts of A Carbon Label for California in working towards legislation to support a voluntary product based carbon labeling system. Please see the draft California State legislation as introduced by Member Ruskin. We hope that governments and businesses see that voluntary product carbon labeling is a mature science and can be accomplished inexpensively, quickly, accurately, and transparently. CarbonCounted further advocates using an open, publicly accessible system (such as CarbonConnect) to track and connect the businesses in a product’s supply chain.
